Clapping for Percussion,
Whistling for Melody
Manifold are the uses of clapping. One can clap for applauding a speech or stage performance, or at the beginning of a new venture, as soon as a ribbon is cut or a coconut is broken. Clapping is used for celebrations of milestone events like birthdays, wedding anniversaries or graduation ceremonies. The same clapping, done deliberately very slow, is a way of insulting someoneâs performance or speech. But people also clap to invite the attention of a person, such as a restaurant waiter whose name they do not know, or when they donât want to strain their vocal cords. In shaahi durbars, two quick claps used to be a message to courtiers, the non-verbal equivalent of takhliya, meaning âplease disappear, we need privacyâ. But clapping is a great percussion method too, and it is centuries old.
Early Man identified conch shells and hollow pieces of wood that could be used as wind instruments. He also found that sticks could hit against each other to make a nice sound, which, when used in a regular pattern, could offer him a beat to sound enjoyable. But these were all external aids, while clapping could be done without outside help.
